What is SEO Article Writing? - SEO Copywriting Explained

Many freelancers have questions about what is SEO; what is SEO copywriting; what is SEO writing. This article explains - in detail - what this is. And, how to make money from it as a freelance writer.

What is SEO?

SEO is an acronym for the phrase "search engine optimization." Search engine optimization is all about doing specific things to your website to drive more traffic to it so that you can increase online sales - and traffic.

What is SEO Article Writing? - SEO Copywriting Explained

What are some of these "things?"

There are many, but here we will discuss what it is as it applies to freelance writers. And, this means writing text in a certain way so that web surfers (ie, internet users) can land on a particular site.

What is SEO As It Relates to Freelance Writers?

What freelance writers need to be concerned with is keywords. What are keywords? Keywords are the words and phrases that web surfers type in when they search for things online.

For example, let's say you were interested in starting a foreclosure cleanup business. You may not know anything about it other than foreclosures are hot in the news right now and you are interested in starting this kind of company.

So, you log onto your favorite search engine, (eg, Google, Yahoo! MSN, etc.) and type in the keywords "foreclosure cleaning business" or "foreclosure cleaning" or "foreclosure cleanup" or some other relevant keyword phrase.

Note: When you type words into a search engine to find something on the internet, the words you type in are called a keyword (one word) or a keyword phrase (two or more words with commas in between).

How Businesses Get to the Top of Search Engine Results

When you type in these words and hit "ENTER", a bunch of sites pop up and you start to surf (ie, click on the results) and start investigating the sites to see if they have the information you need.

The sites that pop up are the results that search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, et al think are the most relevant to the keyword phrase (aka search phrase) you typed in. Companies pay a lot of money to be among the first two or three pages in the results that search engines return.

Why SEO Copywriters are So In Demand and How They Make Their Money

One of the ways they get to pop up in the first two or three pages of results is to have relevant text that contains the proper keyword phrases. And, this is where you as an SEO copywriter can make a lot of money. You write the text that their site needs to pop up high in search engine results.

Many times, companies will simply give you a bunch of keyword phrases and let you write what you want -- as long as it's a certain length (usually 300-500 words).

There are many freelance writers - hundreds of thousands, if not a few million. BUT, only a tiny minority know what SEO is and how to write this type of copy. And, this is why they're so in demand.

SEO copywriters have an in-demand skill. And, as more and more companies move larger portions of their advertising budgets to internet marketing, there is an even greater demand for their skills.

In the SearcheEngineWatch article, The SEO Copywriter: Wordsmithing the Web, William Flaiz, underscores the importance of an SEO copywriter. He writes:

"The role of the agency SEO copywriter is unique because.... Suddenly, the writer must optimize press releases, craft articles for social news, monitor social network communications, and develop wiki content.... a strong SEO copywriter is adaptable and capable of internalizing a lot of new information extremely quickly. These unique individuals have fast become the backbone of many SEO engagements. If content is king, then they [SEO copywriters] are the kingmakers."

And this is why SEO copywriters can charge a premium for their services. If you're looking for a way to start or maximize your income as an online freelance writer, then SEO copywriting is they way to go.

Technical Writing - The Difference Between a Process and a Procedure

In Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1, Act III, Scene 1, in an argument about how to divide a piece of land, one character says that he'll "cavil on the ninth part of a hair." Cavil means to quibble over an unimportant point. Even better, it's a really annoying and trivial objection. The reason for mentioning this is because there's often a fine line between caviling and getting it technically right. Here at The Tech Writer's Tool Kit, the general view is that every word has a specific meaning and no two words ever have exactly the same meaning. Is it a cavil to insist that there's an important difference between a procedure and a process? They both mean a way to get something done. Is changing a tire a process or a procedure? Did you just go through the (process or procedure) of refinancing your home?

Procedure - The dictionary gives the etymology of procedure as a French word, procédure, from proceder which means to proceed. To proceed is defined, simply, as to go forward and procedure is defined as a manner of proceeding. We have to go beyond simple definition to usage. In American English, the word is used, most often, to designate a unique type of undertaking. So, we have medical procedure and nomination procedure. A procedure, then, is a single activity, consisting of multiple steps, performed to accomplish a specific outcome. - This is the procedure we use to elect our officers.- The doctor said the procedure is simple enough to be done in his office.- It's a long and complicated procedure that must be performed carefully.

Process - Starting with the dictionary for the etymology, we do kind of a loop around to find out process comes through Middle English and Old French from Latin prMcdere that means to advance or proceed. Sounds a lot like procedure. But, the definition of process shows a difference. It says a process is a series of actions that bring about a result. In most cases, that result is a completed procedure. The distinction holds up in general usage in a number of fields. For example, we talk about a hair coloring process, events now in process, and processing an order. In Law, process is defined as the whole judicial proceeding (procedure). In Engineering, the steps in changing iron into steel is a process. In Computer Science, it means performing operations on data, which is done by a processor.

Technical Writing - The Difference Between a Process and a Procedure

Based on general usage, then: - a procedure is a total operation - the complete set of actions - that results in some desired outcome- a process is the series of individual steps within the procedure that is followed to achieve the outcome The difference is that you must follow a process in order to complete a procedure. That would mean that saying, "The process of getting a haircut is boring" doesn't mean the same as saying, "The procedure of getting a haircut is boring." It depends on whether you're saying that the individual steps are boring or the whole operation boring. Two different words: two different meanings? We think so. What about you?

Power Words And Phrases

I like to use power phrases when writing sales material. These power phrases add punch to a line or a paragraph and I usually use them to start off a sentence.

You can generally find a lot of "power phrases" when reading good sales copy. I usually keep a notebook nearby so that whenever I come across a line or a phrase that I Iike in sales material, I write it down for possible future use.

They are also great for writers block too. When I am stuck in the middle of writing, I'll usually refer to my power phrases, and the next thing I know, the sentences sometimes start writing themselves.

Power Words And Phrases

Some examples of the power phrases I use include:

"Listen closely..."

"As you may already know..."

"Now, I don't know about you..."

"Well, I've got news for you..."

"Let me explain..."

"And best of all..."

"In fact..."

"Here's the bottom line..."

"Quite frankly..."

"Now, I know what you're thinking..."

"Take a deep breathe and relax..."

"The answer is yes..."

Power phrases can be used to grab and hold people's attention so that they keep reading. Some may even call these "hypnotic" phrases.

Even single words can invoke a reaction in some people that can be used to add "punch" to your sales material. I call these power words.
Some power words to use in your marketing include:

Free, Powerful, Incredible, Easy, Shocking, Cheap, Revealed, Best, Uncovered, Hidden, Proven, Results, Revolutionary, Profits, Fantastic, Inside, Learn, Enhance, Hottest, New, Improved, Unbelievable, Ultimate, Offer, Master, Scientific, Private, Breakthrough, Save, Guaranteed, Tricks, You, Love, Limited, Special, Secrets

You can use power words to add punch to a headline, sentence, a short ad, or whatever fancies you.

Those are just a few of the power words and phrases that I have collected over the years.

Do yourself a favor:

Another power phrase...?

No really... do yourself a favor:

Always keep a notebook nearby and look out for words or phrases that capture your attention in sales material. Then write it down. If it captured your attention, it's sure to capture other people's attention too.

And over time, you'll have plenty of power words and phrases to choose from when writing your sales material.

They sure make life a lot easier...

And profitable too!

7 Essential Elements of Successful Case Studies

Case studies are essentially problem - solution narratives. However, to flesh out a case study and make sure it communicates the messages you want to get across to your target audience, make sure your case study writer includes these 7 essential elements.

1. The problem or challenge

Define the problem clearly. Detail the situation the company (or customer) was in. What does the customer have to overcome? What stood in the way? Grappling with a problem adds conflict - an essential element to any good story. To heighten impact, conflict needs to be meaningful so highlight the stakes involved. Why was it so necessary for the company to overcome this challenge?

7 Essential Elements of Successful Case Studies

2. The customer or company

Whether the case study centers on a person or a company, they become a character a protagonist in the story. Add details that develop the character. How long in business? Does the person have an intriguing background? What about setbacks, ups and downs? When the reader becomes interested in a character (person or company) the chances for a successful case study are much higher.

3. Process

What did the customer go through to find a solution? Highlighting the solutions that did not work is a way to contrast your product or service with the competition.

4. Discovery

How did the customer find out about solution? The discovery moment is not just another fact. It's a classic moment in storytelling that adds dimension to the journey the protagonist went through to find an effective solution.

5. Solution

Here is the opportunity to put a spotlight on your product, service or company. Show what it can do. Detail some of the top features and benefits, but be careful to keep it educational instead of promotional.

6. Implementation

How long did it take before the solution was up and running? How much training was involved? Were there any rough patches? These are details your potential customer wants to know and answering them honestly will only add to your credibility in their eyes.

7. Results

Of course this is the part of the story that people really want to see. Be as concrete as possible. Use measurements that are meaningful to the audience or which paint the solution in a brighter light. For instance, EBITDA may be very important for some audiences while revenue gains may have more impact to others.

The specifics of case studies will differ, but making sure your case study writer includes all these essential elements can help ensure they do the job you want them to do.

What is Content Writing & Why Has it Become So Popular?

What Is Content Writing?

Content writing is a serviced offered mainly to website owners and businesses, and many countries in the world have seen the benefits of this service, using it positively for their company. Content writing itself can come in many forms and companies that offer it can write about one specific category or a broad range, usually the ones that target a certain niche such as sport will be more focused and knowledgeable on that area than those that try to write about every possible category, so you will be getting your money's worth.

Why Is Content Writing So Popular?

What is Content Writing & Why Has it Become So Popular?

Its main use is to save webmasters a lot of time by writing out content for the websites, so instead they will produce a brief and outsource the job to a professional content writer who will research the given subject and complete the assignment for you. Content writing itself is quite cheap but with so many people offering this a service you do need to make sure the company or person is legitimate and that there prices are reasonable. As a guide, £7 - £10 for 250 words of content for web copy, articles and blog posts/news pieces is an excellent price and if you are going to a company that specialise is one certain area of expertise then you may pay a little more, but then you will know the quality and experience on that subject will be higher than elsewhere.

What Types Of Content Writing Is There?

Content writing isn't just for website copy though, a lot of business and individuals will ask for articles, blog posts, press releases and many more forms of the service.

For example if you wanted daily news pieces on topical subjects consisting of 150 words a day, these will be classed as blog posts and at many content companies they will gladly do this every day of the working week for you and in some instances offer an attractive price if you are passing work their way for a long period of time. Press releases and articles are quite similar, the first holding more editorial quality than the latter but still, you can expect 350 - 600 words for a good article.

Copywriting eBooks - Which Copywriting eBook Should I Read?

Many people looking to develop their writing skills consider the option of buying an eBook. Buying a copywriting eBook allows you to access the distilled wisdom of a professional copywriter quickly and easily. The ease of publishing offered by the format means you will be able to choose from a huge variety of copywriting eBooks, since copywriters who want to publish their books are not constrained by the need to find a paper publisher who is willing to invest in their work. Instead, they can simply publish their copywriting eBook online, allowing aspiring copywriters to search for, browse and download their works directly.

The price of copywriting eBooks varies widely. Some are available for nothing, having been conceived largely as marketing devices or perhaps as the incentive for website visitors to enter an email on a so-called 'squeeze page'. At the other end of the scale, some are sold online for as much as or even more.

If you're considering investing in a copywriting eBook, it's worth looking to see if a sample passage or a few pages have been provided for you to evaluate the book before you pay. Many authors offering longer, more comprehensive works on copywriting offer this facility so that their readers can confirm the quality of the content before they commit to making a purchase.

Copywriting eBooks - Which Copywriting eBook Should I Read?

Another thing to look for is a list of contents. Ideally, you should be able to assess what's actually in your copywriting eBook before you download and start reading it. OK, the eBook might be free, but even so you don't want to invest time and effort to download and read something that's mostly filler. So make sure you can check out the contents list, and judge for yourself how valuable the content is going to be. You're looking for solid, factual headings, not jazzy headlines. The best copywriter eBooks are filled with proven, practical techniques, and certainly won't pretend to offer any kind of amazing 'new solution' or 'hidden secret'. If something sounds like it's too good to be true, it probably is.

There are many high-quality copywriting eBooks out there, at a variety of price points. Many eBooks are given away free, usually as an incentive to sign up for a copywriting course or purchase additional eBooks, or perhaps to encourage clients to use a particular copywriter's services. Free copywriters' eBooks available on the web include Alex Mandossian's 21 Copywriting Secrets, Make Your Words Sell! by Joe Robson and Ken Evoy, and Sales Letter Success by Stuart Elliott.

If you're considering a free copywriting eBook, it's worth remembering that no-one is going to give away that much truly valuable content for free. While you might find some useful information in them, it's likely to be fairly basic or generic, rather than specialised or advanced knowledge that you can use to develop your skills to the next level. So free copywriting books might be a good first step if you're just starting out as a copywriter, but for something a little more involved you'll probably want to consider splashing out some cash.

There are many copywriting eBooks available on a paid-for basis. Usually, the author will have put together a web page devoted to their eBook, at which they'll outline the content and explain why they feel you should pay for it. Paid-for copywriting eBooks include Confessions of a Website Copywriter by Lenny Eng, Successful Freelance Copywriting by Glenn Murray and my own Copywriting Masterclass.
